I just asked this question (to Atheists...)?
I don't consider myself an Atheist as I do not deny the possibility of any deity/s, nor do I agree that they exist. I choose to take the theory that presents the most evidence at the time, which at the moment is not in favor of any existing deity/s. Having said that, I am studying neuro-science and myself and my mother have had very similar experiences. I don't think the story is fabricated - in fact it's known around the world to happen(maybe just exaggerated a little or simplified too much for this forum). At the moment I have not read enough evidence on the subject to suggest exactly how or why our brains do that, nor do I see it as evidence that any deity/s exist. I too, don't find the statement that 'our brain does funny things' to be a satisfactory argument for how or why this happens, but I do think that science will come up with evidence to at least try to explain the phenomenon (if it hasn't already). I realize I haven't really answered your question but it's not something one can answer truthfully without any real evidence on the subject - just like you can't prove that God exists. I am a spiritual person in that I do believe in 'souls', just not in the way that traditional religious organizations do (in fact what I believe in would probably be viewed similarly to the way the church views the occult) I could go on, but that's another story. It's an interesting phenomenon and I wish I knew more, so I will be looking forward to reading everybody else's comments on this.
