Is the rate that the heart contracts at controlled by the SAN or the autonomic nervous system?

apparently "neurones of the autonomic nervous system carry impulses to the heart to regulate the rate of contraction" but then the book suggests that the myogenic cardiac muscle of the sinoatrial node creates the contractions itself as "it has the greatest ability for self-excitation and the electrical activity generated there immediately spreads into the atrial wall"
